15 Top Tips to Write a Powerful Résumé - Jane Jackson Career

15 Top Tips to Write a Powerful Résumé - Jane Jackson Career If you arent getting any attention from your resume you may well be thinking,Whats wrong with my resume?  There might not be anything really wrong with it, it could be that youve just overlooked some essential elements that will make your resume stand above the competition.Over the past 14 years of coaching over 1,000 clients who have gone through career transition, I’ve only come across two resumes that didn’t need at least a little work to make them stronger! So you’re looking for a job. I expect youre using all the job search methods available including working with recruiters, making applications for advertised roles, networking and targeting companies directly. For all that you need a resume a soft copy for emailed applications and to attach to an application through a job search portal such as www.seek.com.au or www.jobsdb.com and a hard copy to produce when chatting over a coffee during a networking meeting, or the content of your resume readily available to include in y our LinkedIn profile so your online presence works for you.Is your resume up to date? Does it contain what is required to capture the attention of your desired audience? Is it easy to read, concise and powerful? Have you included relevant accomplishments to demonstrate the tangible value you have added to your current and previous positions?Have you included information that might create a bias in the reader’s mind (information such as your birth date, marital status, religion)?I’m amazed that, with all of the information readily available over the internet about on how to create a powerful resume, that many candidates still include information that isnt relevant and doesnt highlight their suitability for a specific role and may even hinder their chances of being selected for a screening interview. For comprehensive guidance to create a powerful resumé that gets results, check out this How to Write a Resumé online course I created just for you:Here are suggestions that will hel p if you are starting from scratch with your resume:Choose a fuss-free layout that provides enough white space so the resume is easy to read. Ensure the design suits the industry and job function you are targeting (for example, a graphic designer’s resume will need a more creative look than a finance professional’s resume)Keep the font size no smaller than 10 point font and provide enough white space so it’s easy to readAim for 2-3 pages to include the information that is RELEVANT for the role, there is no need to include everything that youve done over your careerEnsure your name and contact details (mobile phone and email address are requirements) are clearly visible at the top of the resume (this may sound obvious but I’ve received resumes that haven’t had this basic information on page one!If youre applying for a specific role, read the job description carefully and take note of key words that describe essential requirements of the role.  If you have those skills or t raits, make sure you include them in the resume.  The right key words will help to get you noticed.Include a Career Summary or Professional Profile at the beginning that highlights your relevant experience, core competencies and technical skills. This should capture the attention of the reader instantly and place you in the ‘yes’ or ‘maybe’ rather than the ‘no’ pile when being screened. Then add your professional experience. You’ll need the company name, job title and the dates you held each role. Start with your most recent role and then add your previous roles in reverse chronological order.Under each role describe briefly the scope, responsibilities and important aspects of that role, to whom you reported, the number of people you managed, size and type of projects you handled and size of budget if relevant. After responsibilities, include bullet points of your accomplishments for that role. These should include the tangible results of your efforts. These accomplishm ents may be profit improvements, streamlining of processes, time savings, cost savings, improved moral within the department, completion of projects under budget or ahead of schedule, etc.As a rule of thumb, the screener will want to know the roles you held the past 10-12 years. There may be exceptions to the rule and it depends on your particular circumstance if you must include information that is older than that. Make sure that information is relevant to the role you are targeting.Your academic qualifications and professional development courses come next. If there is a particular qualification that is a ‘must have’ to be selected for the role, then you can add it in the career summary on page one so it’s easily noticed. If you have any relevant professional memberships and affiliations then create a section for those next. You may put ‘Referees available upon request’ at the end if you wish; it’s not a necessity. If you are shortlisted for the role after being intervie wed you will be asked for your referees anyway. Some applications request for referees details up front, in which case, follow the instructions!Proof read, proof read, proof read!!! Get someone else to proof read it too â€" sometimes you can work so hard on your resume that you don’t even notice little mistakes anymore. If you state that you are detail oriented and the reader spots mistakes, that will probably land your resume in the no pile.Something many people don’t realise is that you must tailor your resume to suit each and every application you make, highlighting the skills you have that are most relevant to be successful in the role. The resume does not get you a job. If you are a good match for the role it should get you a screening interview. After that it’s up to you to prepare well for the interview process and wow them with your communication skills and expertise. Job Search Get a temp job if it will get you off the couch - Hallie Crawford

Job Search Get a temp job if it will get you off the couch Have you given up in your job search? Get a temp job if itll get you off the couch, of course Im being a little facetious. I hope youre not sitting on the couch when youre supposed to be searching for a job. The truth is, some of us need a little extra motivation, a schedule, and a reason to get us out of the house to stay positive in our job search so that we wont get dejected. I received this email from a group coaching client the other day and I wanted to share: I have a schedule conflict tonight and will not be on the call. However, I hope youll share my check-in with the others. When things start to break they all come at once! The temporary job has really been a blessing. Tell Kellie she was right, much better than sitting at  home away from other people. I am thankful to have it. -Group Coaching Client This client enjoys having interaction with people, so its great that he gets that at his temp job, even though that position is not what he wants to do forever. If being around others and having a sense of purpose every day, even if its not your dream, will help you stay motivated then get out there. It may not be your dream, but it could be the path towards your dream. It will keep you busy, and will be something to put on your resume (if its worth putting on there.) You never know, it could be a networking opportunity as well. Stay off the couch and move forward in your job search! Job Search Help

7 unprofessional email habits you need to avoid

7 unprofessional schmelzglas habits you need to avoidNo matter what level you are within your career, aussichts are you feel overwhelmed every time you sit down at your computer and check your inbox. Email is not just something to check in with once in a while and ignoretriaging and responding to schmelzglass is a huge part of the workday. In fact, a survey done byAdobe found that almost half of the 1,000 people surveyed expect people to get back to them within the hour googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) You have to read and respond quickly, which leaves room for careless errors to creep in. Much of the impression you make with colleagues will be digital, so you need to remain sharp and focusedeven if youre working on your 30th email of the day. Read on for some very common errors that tend to occur when you let your guard down.Replying all for everythingBefore you hit replay all, pause. Always pause. Ask yourself, Does everyone on this thr ead really need to see my reply? Spend an extra minute culling down the list of recipients, or just respond only to the sender. Youll be responsible for keeping everybodys inboxes clutter-free for at least a day if you do this. Theres always the option of forwarding something along if later down the line you realize he or she needs to see it.Careless CC-ingThis is in the same vein as the reply all, except the stakes are higher and you could actually land yourself, your boss, or your client in hot water by adding a name to an email chain without asking first. Dont share info that isnt yours to sharenever assume its okay to forward or share an email with a new recipient (especially one outside of the company) until youre sure all parties are on board. Take the time to confirm if you ever haveany doubt.Forgetting the attachmentThis is one error that isnt the biggest verstndigung im strafverfahren the first time it happens. But if it becomes a habit, youll start to look silly. You might think its okay, even cute, to send the follow up Ooops Attachment attached email to your entire department when youve forgotten to attach a necessary document to the first email. But it isntit just makes you seem careless. The theme that keeps coming up applied here, too take your time. Do the last-minute check to make sure all recipients are correct, necessary, and that youve attached your attachments before you send.Unnecessarily crying UrgentDo you get too many red-flagged emails, only to realize when you open them that they really arent that big of a deal? Dont abuse the urgent functionif and when you do need to send an email with a true crisis, no one is going to believe you.Rambling on and onThink about the last time you opened up an email to see a wall of text. Be honest did you really read the whole thing, every word? Probably not. There is no reason for your two-page email. Be as clear and concise as possible and save your coworkers (and yourself) a whole lot of valuable ti me. People are more likely to read and digest your email if its short, sweet, and to the point. Bullet points are your friendMisspelling someones nameTheres a very good chance that your recipients name is literally in his or her email address. Do the extra two-second check to make sure youve spelled it right. If youre mentioning other people within your email, take the time to double-check their names as well. Dont assume that because someone has a common name that it takes the common spelling Michelle or Michele? Gennifer or Jennifer? Geoffrey or Jeffrey? It matters.Writing bad subjects (or no subjects)Your recipients should be able to tell what your email is about simply by glancing at the subject line in their inbox. Dont be vague. For example, Follow-up is a very vague email subject, but Follow-up Notes from 9/15 Board Meeting is direct and clear. Weeks, months, or years down the line, will your recipient be able to tell whats in your email? Write your subject lines with that go al in mind. And please, please always include a subjectleaving the line blank is just lazy.

The researchers gathered Google images of professional women. They then conducted six texts in which participants ranked these photos by attractiveness, via an online crowdsourcing platform, Mechanical Turk. The participants were also tasked with rating the photographed womens truthfulness and trustworthiness across various scenarios, and whether or not they thought that the photographed women should be fired.According to the research, both men and women tend to think that attractive women are less deserving of trust due to pri mal feelings of sexual insecurity, jealousy, and fear. But the researchers came to this conclusion because of the strategic approach they took prior to showing the participants the images. In two separate experiments, they used a prime, or a suggestion intentionally designed to put participants in an emotional state that could very well impact their opinions. They did this by asking some participants to remember a time that they felt sexually secure in a relationship, and by asking others to think about a time when they felt the opposite. They found that those who were primed with feelings of sexual insecurity tended to view the attractive women as less truthful and more deserving of getting fired than the rest.Highly attractive women can be perceived as dangerous, and that matters when we are assessing things like how much we trust them and whether we believe that what they are saying is truthful, Leah Sheppard, lead author of the paper, said.Of course, this research, albeit nothing new, is infuriating. This is obviously outrageously unfair, given that in the vast majority of industries a womans ability or willingness to conform to traditional beauty standards has nothing to do with her capacity to do a job well, writes Stylist contributor, Moya Crockett. But if average-looking women lose out on career opportunities to those who are more conventionally gorgeous, and beautiful businesswomen are viewed with ruthless suspicion by those around them, as this new research suggests, where does that leave us? Essentially, were stuck in the middle, trying to be the visual equivalent of Goldilocks not too pretty, not too plain. So it seems, theres no one right way to make everyone else in your workplace comfortable with your appearance and, as such, earn their trust and respect. (Nor is their discomfort your burden.) But at least you can rest assured that their unfounded judgments of you stem from their own insecurities. So if youre going to be damned if you do, damned if you dont, you might as well do or dont as you damn well please...--AnnaMarie Houlis is a feminist, a freelance journalist and an adventure aficionado with an affinity for impulsive solo travel.
